Forecasting the range of electric trucks to assist with reliable tour planning

Bosch provides a new energy consumption prediction cloud service aimed at commercial vehicle fleet operators who are introducing battery-electric vehicles into their fleet and therefore need a reliable prediction of the driving range. The service assists transport management systems in estimating the range of battery-electric trucks for different operating scenarios. Based on various parameters and different consumption models, the new service helps to plan tours, where the vehicles reach all destinations as planned and the vehicle batteries can be recharged in time to start the next tour.

The energy consumption prediction cloud service supports fleet operators to operate battery electric vehicles without having to worry about range problems. The support begins right from when the dispatcher uses the transport management system (TMS) to plan the routes. The energy consumption prediction cloud service can be conveniently integrated in the TMS. The planned route with all loading and unloading information is seamlessly transferred from the TMS to the cloud service.

Energy consumption prediction evaluates the route and predicts whether the vehicle can reach all destinations with or without needing to be recharged on route. If the vehicle does need to be recharged, an additional stop must be considered in the route planning, and the TMS can easily reorganize the routes. All the driver needs to know is where to load and unload the transport goods, when and where to stop for charging, and how long the charging process is expected to take. This ensures the driver has the best chance of delivering all goods just in time – without any unpleasant surprises. And the fleet manager can turn their attention to other tasks with peace of mind.

How energy consumption prediction works

The prediction considers multiple variables: The vehicle model and its curb weight are at the core of our models. In addition, we take account of the ambient temperature as well as all loading and unloading information from the transport management system. The road and topology information are retrieved based on a route service which is already integrated.

The results show the consumption prediction per route and an estimation of the battery state for each leg and at the end of the tour.
