The number of electrified passenger cars, light commercial vehicles, and heavy commercial vehicles will rise sharply globally by the end of the decade. In addition to this, the level of automation of transmissions in passenger cars and two-wheelers is increasing continuously.

Operations of the actuator

The brushless DC motor (BLDC) offers high dynamics and torque density in minimal space. The platform enables implementation of an intelligent drive strategy, variable torque scaling through adaptation of the active length and several configuration options for the electronics. The powertrain actuator is designed for harsh ambient conditions (depends on load profile/application), e.g. high NVH (noise, vibration, and harshness) and demanding vibration and tightness requirements.

A precise position sensor is integrated in the type S actuator. Control takes place in the higher-level control unit. Applications include the shift/select function in the transmission and electrical clutch actuation.

In addition to position and rotational speed control, the powerful electronics of the type M enables additional control unit functions. These include execution of customer-specific system software, communication with other control units or sensors via the CAN bus or FlexRay, and control of other system components. Applications include controlling torque distribution in transfer cases and differentials and shift actuation in multi-speed eAxles.
