The combustion engine foundation for Flex Fuel and Flexstart systems is based on proven port fuel injection technology. Interconnected system components detect the ethanol content with high precision, allowing the control unit to adjust the air-fuel ratio for efficient torque delivery. Through continuous development, Bosch also offers these Flex Fuel systems for direct injection.
The high knock resistance of ethanol (110 octane) also enables vehicle manufacturers to achieve higher compression ratios, resulting in increased engine performance. For turbocharged engines, ethanol provides an additional power boost: E85 and especially E100 (with 7% water content) absorb heat from the hot charge air during evaporation (charge air cooling). The cooled mixture contains a higher mass of air per volume, which improves engine volumetric efficiency and increases power output – ideal for downsizing.
