The crowdsourced localization map uses various landmarks in the vehicle’s surroundings (traffic signs, guardrails, curbs, individual lane markings, etc.) to allow the position of the vehicle to be precisely determined down to the decimeter.
Current radar and video data is generated while driving. This data from the vehicles is sent from the manufacturer’s cloud to the Bosch IoT cloud via dedicated communication interfaces. Bosch uses this data to create the localization map, which is compatible with all standard map formats. The map manufacturer integrates the localization map into the HD map and provides it to the users.
Today’s video sensor systems are very good at detecting and classifying relevant features of the surroundings, even by using textures (such as lane markings). The range, however, is limited. Radar sensors have a significantly greater range, but are only suitable for recognizing objects, not markings or colors.
Precise localization with the localization map allows the data from the various sensors to be provided in a common, globally consistent map. This makes it possible, for example, to detect a vehicle using radar and determine which lane it is traveling in even beyond the optical resolution of video systems.
