Road signature is a crowdsourced localization service that enables automated vehicles to determine their exact position. Radar and camera systems provide information on objects in the vehicle environment and enable highly accurate and robust vehicle localization.

The crowdsourcing-based road signature uses various landmarks in the vehicle environment (traffic signs, guardrails, individual lane markings, etc.) and can determine the position of the vehicle in the decimeter range.
Current data by the vehicles’ radar and video sensors will be generated while they are driving. Communication boxes such as Bosch’s connectivity control unit will transmit the data from the vehicles to the manufacturers’ cloud and then on to the Bosch IoT Cloud. Bosch will use this to create the road signature, which is compatible with all conventional map formats. The map provider’s responsibilities will include integrating the road signature in the overall map and distributing it.
Today’s video sensors can detect and classify relevant environmental characteristics also on the basis of the texture (for example lane markings). However, the detection range is limited. Radar sensors have a much wider detection range, but are only suitable for detecting objects, not markings and colors.
The precise localization with the road signature makes it possible to prescribe the different sensor perceptions in a common and globally consistent map. In this way, it is possible, for example, to assign a vehicle detected by the radar to a lane even at a distance beyond the optical resolution of video systems.
