The right tracks for your test drives

The Boxberg proving ground has a total area of 94 hectare (approximately 240 acres), with a great number of different test tracks covering a total area of 25 hectare (approximately 60 acres). The grounds are surrounded by the three kilometers high-speed oval. All the other test tracks are located inside the perimeter. The Bosch Boxberg Forum building also offers a variety of room options for product presentations, conferences and seminars.

Test tracks

High-speed oval

The high-speed oval is designed for tests in a speed range up to 200 km/h. It is provided with three lanes (width 3.75 m each) and a hard shoulder (width 3 m). The standard driving direction is clockwise. A special crash barrier (closed at the bottom) surrounds the complete high-speed oval and enables motorcycles to use this track.

Driving-dynamics area

The driving-dynamics area is a flat circular area and is constructed of asphalt without gaps. Overall diameter is 300 m. On this area, braking maneuvers, lane changes, J-turns, driving in a circle or slalom driving can take place. For driving in a circle, markings are provided with radii of 25, 50, 60, 80, 100, and 120 m. If required, a section of the driving-dynamics area can be flooded with water. In addition, the circular area is provided with markings for a handling track and for the various standard lane changes. Next to the driving-dynamics area a pavilion is located with an air-conditioned meeting room and great view onto the driving-dynamics area and brake-measurement tracks.

Fording and splash water basin

This is where electronic systems prove their resistance to sprays and splashes of water. The fording and splash water basins can be flooded to a depth of up to one meter.

Shallow basin: length 100 m, depth up to 0.3 m
Deep basin: length 30 m, depth up to 1 m

Handling course

On the handling courses 1 and 2, the vehicle’s handling can be tested in extreme curvy situations. For this purpose, our handling courses provide a variety of different curve radii, curve slopes, climbing gradients and downhill slopes.

Handling course 1:
Handling course 1 is designed for higher-speed driving and due to the curve radii being between 48 m and 101 m it is suitable for all types of vehicles.

Handling course 2:
The curve radii of this track are between 15 m and 115 m. In some cases the curves feature an inward or an outward slope. This leads to an increase in the degree of difficulty. Sections of the track can also get irrigated. In addition, there is a drifting curve with increased cross slope. The course can be partitioned individually with pylons into different segments to absolve special tests and to carry out trainings or events. Handling course 2 is not suitable for commercial vehicles and buses.

Mountain pass:
The handling course 2 contains a track module representing a mountain pass. This pass includes the simulation of a winding road with curve radii between 6 m and 15 m and a number of different gradients.

Multi-functional area

The multi-functional area has a size of 250 m x 40 m and is located western of the handling course. This area includes an acceleration lane and is suited for any kind of tests of vehicles. In addition, it is possible to use this area for extensive testings of driver assistance systems.

Rough road tracks

Rough road tracks put suspension and electronics on a hard test. One track provides nine different road surfaces and is suitable for speeds up to about 50 km/h. An additional rough road track, situated in the inner round track, is designed for speeds of up to 100 km/h, and offers nine road surfaces on two lanes. These are arranged adjacent to each other, and also one after the other.

Road surfaces: potholes, washboard, shake and vibration tracks, Belgian block tracks, stretches of road with varying surface levels

The gravel track is situated next to the connection road between the south circle and the north circle. It comprises a covered gravel track with a length of 80 m. The second track has a length of 40 m.

Uphill tracks (5 % up to 30 %)

The uphill tracks are intended for the testing of traction control systems and for tests on downhill braking. In order to be able to perform µ-split tests, wet tiles are integrated in the hills with gradients of 5, 10, 15, and 20 percent. The 20 percent slope hill offers, by the wider tiles area, the possibility to execute the driving test with the whole trace width of the vehicle. The track with a gradient of 30 percent is conceived as the entry to a garage. It also provides a special slope for tilting the vehicle.

ISO noise-measurement track

The noise-measurement track, as per DIN ISO 18044:2014, is located nearby the rough road tracks and can be driven in both directions. The approach lanes have a length of 100 m or 50 m.

Offroad-Parcours

Offroad-Parcours Boxberg Forum

You will find a variety of offroad tracks on the Bosch Boxberg Forum Offroad- Parcours. This course offers many opportunities to test vehicles to their limits. Two uphill and downhill sections with 40% or 50% incline, axle articulation tracks with two levels of difficulty, a 30° ramp driveway, sloped driveway with up to 43° side inclination and two wave tracks.

Crosswind simulation facility

The new facility is located at the Basalt East area on the driving dynamics area with a run-up distance of up to 600 m coming from the inner circuit.

Test track safety

Our track operation team is in continuous radio contact with all test drivers, while track marshals monitor the driving. Fire department and rescue vehicles are continuously on alert on the proving ground. An electronic access control system for vehicles ensures that only authorized drivers can enter the individual sections of the track, thereby limiting the number of vehicles on the tracks. Double crash barriers as well as tire walls and crash zones ensure increased safety when carrying out driving maneuvers.

We offer you the ideal environment for vehicle tests and events. Our diverse facilities enable an efficient process and even extensive test programs can be carried out in a short time.

Car & truck workshops, prototype garages and offices are available for the preparation, maintenance, or evaluation of tests. In the main building you will find conference and meeting rooms. In addition, there is an exclusive space at the vehicle dynamic area, which offers a unique ambience for your events.

The Bosch Boxberg Forum complements this infrastructure with modern, flexible rooms, including a drivable event hall for up to 300 guests.

Bosch Boxberg Forum

With the Bosch Boxberg Forum, we offer you attractive, spacious facilities for your events - whether product presentations lasting several days or one-day events. The drivable event hall offers space for up to 300 guests and is ideal for exceptional vehicle presentations. In addition, the gallery offers a complete overview of the event area in the event hall and enables cross-floor event concepts.

A short distance from the rear entrance of the event hall to the off-road course makes it possible to watch dynamic live demonstrations.

The Bosch Boxberg Forum is directly connected to the test site via a connecting road. This enables the uncomplicated use unlicensed vehicles at events on the test site.

Data security

To ensure data and information security, a number of measures have been implemented at the Boxberg proving ground. These include separately lockable offices with lockable cabinets as well as lockable conference rooms which are hidden from sight.

The entire proving ground is surrounded by a fence that is designed as a privacy fence for long stretches. In addition, plantings provide a natural privacy shield.

At the entire proving ground, all kinds of image recording devices are strictly forbidden. Digital cameras, mobile phones with a camera, etc. must be kept in designated lockers at the entrance area. Tablets, laptops and other devices able to record images which are required for working at the testing site are only permitted if the camera is sealed up.

If filming with a drone is unavoidable, this can be carried out to a limited extent after approval. All photo and film recordings are monitored. This prevents prototypes etc. from being photographed or filmed unintentionally.

When can the Boxberg proving ground be used?

On working days (Monday to Friday) the proving ground is open from 7:00 a. m. to 7:30 p. m. Apart from that, the proving ground is open by special arrangement.

What requirements must be met to use the Boxberg proving ground?

This briefing takes place from Monday to Friday at 9:00 a. m. and 1:15 p. m.
Prior registration is necessary.

How is the test track utilization billed?

Upon arrival at the proving ground, every vehicle is provided with an on-board unit (OBU).
This OBU is used to register each entry and exit to and from a given test track, together with the time the vehicle was on the track.
Every newly started half hour will be charged. On request, a short-user rate can be chosen, with quarterly hour booking.

Minimum driver qualification

Since July 1, 2015 a recognized driver training is mandatory. This qualification must be comparable to the Bosch basic training. Without this qualification the use of the test track is not allowed.
