Characteristics of ESP®
The electronic stability program (ESP®) makes a significant contribution to road safety by preventing vehicles from skidding, thus helping to prevent accidents and save lives. Due to a wide variety of powertrain technologies and degrees of automation, braking systems in vehicles are subject to fundamental changes and must be flexible and modular. Vehicle manufacturers strive for personalization and differentiation, for example through driving dynamics and driving experience.
The latest generation of the ESP® is a fundamental part of the state-of-the-art braking systems, and perfectly designed to meet the requirements from the automotive megatrends.
Automation
Different vehicle segments, sizes and weights as well as more stringent time-to-lock requirements for automatic emergency braking demand a complete and scalable brake pressure dynamics portfolio. The modular ESP® portfolio offers variants with scalable flow rates from 6 to 20 cm3/s per brake circuit.
The ESP® module can be combined with different types of brake boosters. The combination with the electromechanical brake booster iBooster provides the necessary braking system redundancy for automated vehicles. Furthermore, ESP® supports future brake-by-wire systems.
Electrification
Different noise levels of various powertrain technologies require an enhanced and scalable performance of the braking system with respect to noise, vibration, and harshness (NVH). ESP® offers benchmark performance in this area.
In order to maximize traction on slippery roads, hills and bends, braking control concepts for vehicles with electric drives must be designed differently than for vehicles with internal-combustion engines. With its distributed traction control system, ESP® brings the full potential of electric drives to the road.
Personalization
Vehicle dynamics control 2.0 is the new core control system of ESP®. With vehicle dynamics control 2.0, Bosch is tapping into the full potential of actuators of different vehicle domains, thus creating an extraordinary driving experience matching the individual DNA of a brand or a vehicle.
