The fuel rail supplies fuel to the fuel injectors mounted directly on the fuel rail. That the fuel is available at the required injection pressure at the start of injection and only minimal pressure fluctuations occur between the individual injections is key. For the gasoline port fuel injection, fuel rails made of plastic or stainless steel are available.

The fuel conveyed by the electric fuel pump and condensed at the injection pressure is stored in the fuel rail. The pressure in the fuel rail is regulated either by a pressure regulating valve or through the use of a demand-controlled pump.
The fuel injectors enable the injection of fuel with the highest precision in the intake manifold so that it forms a homogeneous ignition-capable mixture with the fresh intake air.
